Description

Designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens, the $10 Indian Head gold piece was released in 1907 featuring the head of Liberty wearing an Indian headdress on the obverse and a majestic eagle on the reverse side. Rather than a reeded or lettered edge, the $10 Indian Head has 46 raised stars (48 stars in 1912 and later) on the edge of the coin which signified the states of the Union. The first coins minted (Type 1) had no motto IN GOD WE TRUST, but Congress made the motto mandatory on all coins in the Act of May 18, 1908.
